The Darkness get songwriters’ honour
The Darkness grabbed the top songwriting gong at yesterday’s Ivor Novello Awards. The band collected the Songwriters Of The Year prize.
British rock band The Darkness have been named songwriters of the year at The Ivors. The band’s members – Justin Hawkins, Dan Hawkins, Frankie Poullain and Ed Graham – were jointly named winners at the ceremony in London’s Grosvenor House Hotel on Thursday.

THE DARKNESS TO HEADLINE T IN THE PARK AND OXEGEN

David Bowie has cancelled the rest of his European tour because of a trapped nerve in his shoulder. He’ll miss next weekend’s T In The Park music festival where he was due to headline Saturday night’s main stage bill. The Darkness will now step into The Dame’s shoes. T In The Park on 10 July, in Kinross, is Scotland’s biggest festival and the line-up this year includes The Strokes, The Darkness, The Pixies, The Chemical Brothers and Muse. T In The Park organisers confirmed that The Darkness would replace Bowie to headline Saturday night’s main stage.

THE DARKNESS MELT SOME FACES IN SCOTLAND AND IRELAND

The Darkness were understandably “jumping for joy” when they heard that rock legend David Bowie had been forced to pull out of this weekend’s T In The Park festival, his cancellation moving them up to headliners, with The Charlatans filling in below. But they nevertheless paid tribute to The Dame at both ‘T’ and Dublin’s Oxegen. As previously reported, Bowie was forced to cancel his headlining performances due to take place July 10-11 due what appeared to be a pinched nerve. However, the singer was then diagnosed with an acutely blocked artery which required emergency surgery. Bowie left the clinic earlier this week. He is now with his family, and will start working again next month.

Justin Hawkins went hunting yesterday for the gang who stole the wheels off his Jag – armed with a shovel. The Darkness singer had offered a reward to Bizarre readers for any information about his stolen alloys. Yesterday some of you who live near his west London home rang me with information. And I’ve managed to get to the bottom of this whodunnit. Incredibly, the culprits – who I can’t name for legal reasons – live in Justin’s neighbourhood. It looks like they were bungling chancers rather than a slick professional outfit.

THE DARKNESS LIVE DATES ANNOUNCED

We can confirm that the mighty Darkness much rumoured winter UK arena tour will definitely be taking place, and it will include the band’s biggest ever gigs to date. As rumoured, the band will be undertaking a huge eight-date jaunt starting off at the Nottingham Arena, taking in Glasgow, Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield, Cardiff and Birmingham, and ending up in The Darkness’ first headlining date at the Wembley Arena in London.

Hard rockers The Darkness have triumphed at the Kerrang! Awards, winning two awards for the second year running. Justin Hawkins appears naked except for a Gibson “Less Shell” custom guitar on the latest issue of Kerrang! – the world’s biggest rock music magazine – and declares of his fans: “They salivate at the prospect of seeing us and then when they do they sweat. Its all-round moisture loss.”

The Darkness gave an impromptu backstage press conference at the Reading Festival on Friday were they shared their feelings about headlining Reading and confirmed their plans for the future, including the eagerly-awaited follow-up to their début ‘Permission To Land’ and their forthcoming long-form DVD ‘rockumentary’. The band described their headline appearances at the Carling Weekend in Reading and Leeds – and the handful of European festival dates that follow – as the end of ’Permission To Land’ “campaign”.

The Darkness lit up the Carling Weekend: Reading and Leeds Festivals and then brought the curtain down on the Tennents ViTaL ’04 Festival in Belfast with a spectacular show last night (Monday). Fifty-five thousand ‘relaxed’ revellers braved foot-deep mud at the wettest ever Reading Festival to see The Darkness close the main stage with their usual glam rock crowd-pleasing act. They treated the festival crowd to a spectacular firework display during their headline set at the festival (August 27).

SUE WHITEHOUSE HONOURED AT MMF AWARDS

Sue Whitehouse, the manager of rock sensations The Darkness followed up her success at the Music Week awards by walking off with the Barclays Music Manager of the Year Award award at the MMF Roll of Honour Awards, a glittering evening held at the London Hilton in Park Lane last night. Sue was accompanied by the band, who presented her with the award. She discovered The Darkness in 1997, and charismatic lead singer Justin Hawkins praised her for her belief and commitment to the band. Just as well – he’s her partner off-stage too.
